3 Rainbow Wahine earn Big West weekly honors

After securing back-to-back victories and the Outrigger Invitational tournament title, three members of the University of Hawaiʻi women’s volleyball team earned weekly honors from the Big West Conference on Monday.

Freshman outside hitter Cha’lei Reid was named Offensive Player of the Week after posting 50 kills and 10 aces over three matches to also claim tournament Most Valuable Player honors. The Laʻie, Oʻahu native opened with 26 kills against San Jose State and closed the weekend averaging 4.55 kills per set as Hawaiʻi swept Utah Valley and St. John’s.

Reid delivered six service aces in Sunday’s win over St. John’s, the most by a Rainbow Wahine player since 2017. She leads the Big West with 15 aces on the season, averaging 0.68 per set to rank 31st nationally.

Graduate middle blocker Bri Gunderson, a transfer from Eastern Washington, earned her first career Defensive Player of the Week award after averaging 1.64 blocks per set in the tournament. She also added 2.36 kills per set on .489 hitting with seven aces, securing a spot on the All-Tournament Team.

Setter Adrianna Arquette, a Kailua, Oʻahu product, guided the UH offense and was named Setter of the Week. She averaged 10.27 assists per set across the tournament, tying her season-high with 49 assists and adding 14 digs in the five-set opener against San Jose State.

The Rainbow Wahine (2-4) will look to build on their momentum when they close out their homestand with a two-match series against Portland on Thursday and Friday at Bankoh Arena.
