79-year-old bicyclist dead after fatal crash in Kihei

KIHEI, Hawaiʻi (KHON2) – A 79-year-old Kihei man has died after being hit by a pickup truck while riding his e-bike earlier this week.

Police said the bicyclist died on Friday, Oct. 24, at around 4 p.m. at Maui Memorial Medical Center, where he had been hospitalized in critical condition following the crash on Wednesday morning.

According to the Maui Police Department, the collision happened at around 7:22 a.m. on Oct. 22 at the intersection of Kanani Road and Auhana Road in Kihei. Investigators said a white truck was driving on Kanani Road and making a left turn toward the highway when it collided with the bicycle that was heading west on Auhana Road.

The bicyclist was thrown off his bicycle and suffered life-threatening injuries. He was taken to Maui Memorial Medical Center for treatment, where he later passed away.

The driver of the truck, a 40-year-old Kihei man, remained on the scene and was not injured; the three passengers were also unharmed. Police arrested the driver for negligent injury in the first degree, then released him pending investigation.

Authorities said the bicyclist was not wearing a helmet at the time of the collision. The truck’s occupants were reportedly wearing seatbelts, and speed was not considered a factor. The involvement of drugs or alcohol has not been determined.

This marks Maui County’s 14th traffic fatality of 2025, compared to 13 at the same time last year.
