Archaeological dig at Honolulu parking lot to begin in October

HONOLULU (KHON2) — The City and County of Honolulu will begin an archaeological survey at the Kailua Municipal Parking Lot on Oct. 15. The project is scheduled to continue through Oct. 31, 2025.

The parking lot is bordered by Aulike, Uluniu and Maluniu Streets and Kuulei Road, and is managed by the Department of Transportation Services.

The survey is being led by the Department of Design and Construction.

Purpose of the survey

The city will explore 15 sites across the lot to check for historically or culturally significant remains. Work will be done in stages with test pits spread throughout the property.

The city said the survey may last longer if archaeologists find anything that needs further study.

Parking and traffic impacts

The lot will stay open while work is underway. However, up to eight stalls at a time will be closed. Hours are weekdays from 8 a.m. to 4 p.m., excluding weekends and holidays.

Entrances on Aulike Street and Maluniu Avenue may close at times, though at least one vehicle entrance will always remain open. Two pedestrian entrances will remain accessible.

Equipment staging will take place on Aulike Street and Maluniu Avenue to limit traffic problems. Drivers can also use alternate public parking across the street at 25 Aulike St.

City message to the public

The City and County of Honolulu said its archaeological consultant will monitor traffic and adjust equipment placement to minimize disruption.

“The city appreciates the public’s patience and understanding as this important work is conducted,” the official press release said.
