HONOLULU (KHON2) — Multiple areas in Hawaiʻi Volcanoes National Park have reopened to the public following the halt of Kīlauea’s eruption.
According to the HVNP, the public may now visit Hilina Pali Road, Kulanaokuaiki Campground, the Footprints Exhibit and Pepeiao Cabin.
The early morning June 3 short-lived eruption caused multiple hazards, resulting in the closures.
Reports said the eruption happened in a remote area “about 2.5 miles southwest of Kīlauea caldera near the volcano’s upper Southwest Rift Zone.”
Scientists from the USGS HVO reported the following hazards: elevated volcanic gas emissions, ground subsidence, severe earth cracks, hot glass-like surfaces on new lava flows, uneven and rough terrain, and hot temperatures.
The HVNP said Maunaiki Trail and Kaʻū Desert Trail will remain closed due to elevated gases and other volcanic hazards.
