B.J. Penn continues run-ins with the law, arrested and charged with assault

HILO, Hawaii (KHON2) — Jay Dee “B.J.” Penn, 46, was arrested and charged with third-degree assault, Hawaiʻi Police Department officials said.

The former UFC champion was arrested following an alleged assault that took place at approximately 1 a.m. on Nov. 4 in Hilo.

A 45-year-old man told police that Penn had punched and kicked him multiple times. He later had to be hospitalized for his injuries, police said.

He was located at approximately 11:50 a.m. in Hilo, where he was arrested. He was charged and held on $1,000 bail, which Penn later posted.

Penn is most known for being a mixed martial artist and jiu-jitsu fighter. In 2004, he won his first UFC championship, which he would do several more times throughout his career.

In May, Penn was arrested multiple times across back-to-back days. Big Island police said that the fighter had violated terms of a restraining order, leading to his arrest.

Penn also failed to appear in court regarding one of his arrests, which led to him receiving a bench warrant, which he later asked the court to recall.

He will make his initial court appearance on Dec. 2.
