Boat sinks in Wailua, 80 gallons of oil spilled

WAILUA, Kauai (KHON2) — Clean up continues after a boat sank in the Wailua Marina.

On Tuesday, 8/26, the Coast Guard Sector Honolulu received a report of a passenger vessel, The Ronnie-K, that sank in the Wailua River.

The Coast Guard said the total amount of pollution was 80 gallons of diesel.

The submerged vessel was only the 15-foot pusher boat, while the 60-foot passenger section of the Ronnie K remained afloat.

The Coast Guard and the State worked with the tour company to contain the fuel, with officials saying the fuel did not enter the Wailua River.

The boat was lifted out of the water with a crane to prepare it for repairs.

The State says the owner of the boat, Smith’s Motor Boat Inc., is responsible for the cleanup.
