LAIE, Hawaii (KHON2) — On Sun., Aug. 31, at around 4:44 p.m., the Honolulu Fire Department responded to a disabled vessel with boaters off the shores of Laie Point.
The incident occurred when the 18-foot vessel lost engine power, while being one-half mile offshore.
The first unit arrived at 4:56 p.m., where four units staffed with 12 personnel were to investigate.
Officials said the crew on board tried to anchor the vessel, but they were unsuccessful and adrift in the ocean that was about 70 feet in depth.
At 5:10 p.m., Ocean Safety lifeguards on a rescue ski arrived to ensure that the disabled vessel did not hit the reef while towing it towards Kahana Bay Boat Ramp.
At 6 p.m., HFD’s Rescue 2 Boat arrived on-scene, relieved the Ocean Safety rescue ski from towing the vessel, and brought the disabled vessel safely to the Kahana Bay Boat Ramp.
