Boy, 13, dies after car he was driving crashes on Big Island

HAWAII, Hawaii (KHON2) — A single-vehicle collision in Pāhala resulted in the death of a 13-year-old boy on the evening of Sept. 4, the Hawaiʻi Police Department said.

Police responded to the collision on Cane Haul Road at 5:55 p.m.

Upon arrival, authorities found a blue sedan that was being operated by the 13-year-old boy, and determined that the vehicle had left the roadway, went down an embankment and struck a large tree.

A 15-year-old boy, who was the passenger, was not injured in the collision. Neither the driver or passenger were wearing their seatbelt during the collision, police said.

The 13-year-old driver was taken to the hospital, where he later died, authorities said.
