For the second straight week, the Cover2 Built Ford Tough Matchup heads to the country as No. 2 Kahuku hosts undefeated Campbell in an OIA Open Division showdown Saturday night on the North Shore.
Kickoff is set for 6:30 p.m. at Carleton E. Weimer Field and the game will be televised on Spectrum OC16.
Kahuku (4-1) comes off a 28-21 win over Kapolei, scoring 21 unanswered points behind a standout performance from running back Toa Sam. The Red Raiders’ offense has found new life with quarterback Troy Mariteagi, whose ability to extend plays has impressed coaches. Defensively, USC commit and senior linebacker Talanoa Ili anchors a unit that remains among the state’s most physical.
“I’m super excited. I can’t wait,” Ili said. “Going against the best of the best … now we’ve just got to go out and play our best.”
Campbell (5-0) continues to thrive under senior quarterback Brayden Medeiros, who has averaged two touchdown passes per game in replacing current Cal freshman Jaron-Keawe Sagapolutele. Junior receiver Shaison Kupuka‘a has emerged as one of the state’s top playmakers, averaging more than 100 receiving yards per game with touchdowns in all five contests.
“Well, I think definitely the first five games was pretty fun,” said Campbell defensive back and Sacramento State commit Isaiah Chong. “Kahuku is a great team. They got stars all over the place, so going against them … it’s going to be really fun.”
The Red Raiders and Sabers meet in one of the most anticipated matchups of the OIA regular season, with Campbell looking to remain perfect and Kahuku aiming to defend its home turf.
