HONOLULU (KHON2) — Two live opossums were caught on Oct. 21 at two different locations at Honolulu Harbor.
Officials say that around 6 a.m., a shipping company reported seeing one opossum running around in the container yard at Pier 1 overnight.
The Department of Agriculture and Biosecurity’s Plant Quarantine Branch responded and was able to capture it within the hour.
A few hours later, around 11 a.m., a different shipping company reported that it had captured an opossum in a cat trap on the opposite end of the harbor at Pier 51 after seeing the animal running around the container yard.
On Sept. 15, an opossum was caught in Hilo at Hilo Harbor at Pier 1, where an employee reported seeing it between vehicles on the dock.

As per protocol, all animals were put down and tested for rabies. The Hilo opossum tested negative.
Anyone who spots an illegal animal should call the statewide pest hotline at 808-643-PEST (7378).
