The U.S. Coast Guard, Honolulu Police Department and the State of Hawaii Sheriff Division responded to the incident on Friday, Feb. 22 shortly after 4:34 p.m.

Officials said a 43-foot yacht was driving erratically, putting other mariners at risk and violating the permanent security zone near Piers 6 and 11 in Honolulu Harbor.

All inbound and outbound traffic from Honolulu Harbor was halted while a 45-foot Response Boat-Medium crew from Coast Guard Station Honolulu was launched.

The Coast Guard caught up to the vessel speeding out of the harbor and issued commands for the man to stop.

As soon as the yacht decelerated, the Coast Guard boarded the yacht and detained the suspect.

The suspect was later transferred to officers from HPD and the Hawaii Sheriff’s Division.

He was charged with theft, unauthorized control of a propelled vehicle and criminal property damage.
