HONOLULU (KHON2) — Honolulu City Council members worked late into the night as they aimed to make decisions on several key proposals during their final meeting of the year.
Among the items on the agenda, the council deferred a decision on Bill 46, which proposes a “Vacant Homes Tax.”
The measure would introduce a higher property tax classification for residential properties that are either vacant or unlikely to be long-term residences.
The goal of the proposal is to help address the city’s ongoing affordable housing crisis.
However, the council decided to delay the vote to allow for further review of a study on the issue, assess its potential impact, and evaluate the implementation plan.
