HONOLULU (KHON2) — Maui Fire Department revealed the Crater Road fire has been 40% contained as of noon on Saturday.
MFD reported that an active flareup occurred around 11 a.m. on the south flank with Air 2 quickly addressing the situation.
An emergency advisory was put in place by the Maui Emergency Management Agency on Friday at 4:11 p.m. for residents above Kekaulike and Haleakala highways between Upper Kimo and Waipoli roads to be prepared for potential evacuations.
MEMA officials have opened a temporary shelter at King Kekaulike High School’s gymnasium which opened at 3 a.m. Saturday morning and closed at 2 p.m. If an evacuation order is given, the shelter will reopen in minutes.
