Deadly surge: Oʻahu’s 48th traffic fatality doubles 2024 count

HONOLULU (KHON2) — Aug. 4, 2024 marked Oʻahu’s 24th and 25th traffic fatalities for the year. On Aug. 3, 2025, Oʻahu had its 48th traffic-related fatality.

The Honolulu Police Department said the 48th fatality for Oʻahu involved a collision between a moped and a car that resulted from the moped driver performing moped tricks rather than following safe driving practices.

On the heels of this latest fatality, DTRIC Insurance has launched its third annual Drive Aloha Challenge. It’s a statewide call for drivers to show that safety matters.

From Aug. 1 through Aug. 30, Hawai‘i residents can enter by downloading the DriveWell Go app. The app tracks driving behavior and gives feedback after each trip.

Drivers earn points by avoiding risky habits like speeding, phone use, rapid acceleration, hard cornering and harsh braking.

The top three participants with the highest safe driving scores will win cash prizes. First place receives $2,500. Second place earns $1,000, and third gets $500.

To qualify, drivers must be at least 18 years old, have a valid Hawai‘i driver’s license and join the challenge with token code 134617. Each participant must log at least 30 trips and 150 miles by 11:59 p.m. HST on Aug. 30.

“We launched Drive Aloha to make our roads safer,” said Takuya Mitsueda, president and CEO of DTRIC Insurance. “There have been 45 traffic-related deaths on Oʻahu so far this year, up from 22 at this time last year. That should concern all of us. The Drive Aloha Challenge encourages safer driving habits through friendly competition and a shared commitment to protecting our communities.”

The challenge is part of Drive Aloha, a broader safety initiative that began in 2016. The campaign encourages all roadway users — drivers, cyclists and pedestrians — to be courteous and alert.

Cambridge Mobile Telematics developed the DriveWell Go app and powers the challenge through its telematics platform.

“DTRIC’s Drive Aloha Challenge turns safe driving into a community-wide movement,” said William V. Powers, Co-Founder & CEO of CMT. “Hawai‘i drivers are showing that safety isn’t just an individual decision, it’s a collective mission. We’re proud to support DTRIC as they continue to raise awareness, reduce crashes, and make real progress on road safety.”
