HONOLULU (KHON2) — The Hawaii State Department’s Respiratory Disease Activity dashboard revealed that COVID-19 activity is on the rise once again.
The new dashboard gives insight into the current COVID-19, flu and respiratory syncytial virus numbers around the state.
DOH officials said respiratory diseases occur in Hawaii year-round. As of now, COVID-19 activity is at the “yellow” stage, meaning it is at a medium activity level. The flu and RSV are at the “green” stage, or low activity levels.
The new Respiratory Disease dashboard provides, in one place, a summary of what is happening with several major respiratory viruses that contribute to respiratory disease in Hawai‘i. This helps people make informed decisions about their health. This week, the dashboard shows that COVID-19 test positivity is higher than expected and climbing, and that ED (emergency department) visits and hospital admissions for COVID-19 are also going up. Based on this information, I would recommend checking whether you’ve had the 2023-24 COVID-19 vaccine, and if not, or if you’re eligible for a repeat dose, go get it today.

The CDC has been tracking two new COVID-19 variants, especially FLiRT, “the more predominant strain” in Hawaii’s community.
According to Dr. Douglas Kwock from Hawaii Pacific Health, the current COVID vaccine, designed to combat the omicron variant, will also be effective with FLiRT.
Health officials said COVID-19 remains a health concern. The public is advised to protect themselves using the following precautions to avoid getting sick:
Stay up-to-date with COVID vaccines
Stay in while sick and only participate in activities after you are fever-free for at least 24 hours
Wear a mask while indoors if you have or are recovering from COVID-19 symptoms to protect others from getting sick
Test yourself for COVID-19 to see if you may need treatment.
