Don’t get stuck in the ‘Back to School Jam’ with these DOT tips

HONOLULU (KHON2) – Summer is almost over, and that means kids are going back to school, which also means traffic is going to get heavier. That’s why the State Department of Transportation wants to remind you about its ‘Back to School Jam’ campaign.

It’s an annual campaign where DOT reminds folks of the increase in traffic demand as the school year begins for public and private schools and colleges.

The first day for public school students is August 4th. UH begins its fall semester on August 25th, and many private schools will start up between those dates.

Transportation officials want to remind everyone to plan ahead. According to DOT, there are a lot of tools like Google or Apple maps that will give you estimated trip times based on how many people are out on the road.

If you can, set up a carpool with coworkers or other parents at your kids’ school. They also have high occupancy vehicle lanes like the Zipper Lane that can save you between 15 to 20 minutes.
