DWS: Stage 3 water shortage declared for Maui County

HONOLULU (KHON2) — The Upcountry service area of Maui is under a Stage 3 water shortage effective Oct. 17, said the County of Maui Department of Water Supply.

To upgrade a water shortage to Stage 3, the DWS must determine that the anticipated water demand in an area is “projected to exceed available water supply by 31% or higher.”

Upcountry service area

Affected areas of the Stage 3 shortage include Makawao, Upper and Lower Kula, Haʻikū, Hāliʻimaile, Pukalani, Kokomo, Kaupakalua, Ulumalu, Keōkea, ʻUlupalakua and Kanaio.

The 180-day initial publication notice has passed, meaning the water restrictions apply to agricultural water customers as well, said DWS.

Water conservation measures

The following mandatory water conservation measures will be implemented immediately:

  • All nonessential water use for commercial and industrial use stops
  • Watering turf grass is prohibited
  • Plant containers, trees, shrubs and vegetable gardens can be watered one day per week, if hand watered or with drip irrigation
  • Leaks, breaks or faulty sprinklers must be repaired within two days of notice
  • Using potable water at temporary construction meters is prohibited
  • Personal washing of vehicles is prohibited
  • Watering parks, school grounds and recreation fields is prohibited

These measures aim to “preserve remaining water supplies and ensure continued access to water for essential public health and safety needs, such as drinking water and sanitation.”

Penalties for failing to comply with any of the restrictions include a $500 fine for each violation and could result in the removal of the water meter.
