Enjoy Free Screenings during the First-Ever Waikīkī Film Awards at the Outrigger

HONOLULU (KHON2) — The stars will shine brighter in Waikīkī this Saturday, Aug. 23, as the inaugural Waikīkī Film Awards light up the Outrigger, celebrating Native Hawaiian storytellers and filmmakers.

The event is co-created by Jonathan Rotmensch, CEO and founder of Hawaiian Aroma Caffé, alongside Outrigger’s Geoff Lau.

This history-making evening honors filmmakers from Hawai‘i and around the globe, showcasing bold storytelling and creative vision with Waikīkī Beach as the breathtaking backdrop.

Guests will enjoy gourmet bites from local vendors, handcrafted cocktails, and a special Tahitian dance performance before the night’s feature screenings.

Two standout films will be highlighted:

  • “The Queen’s Flowers” by Ciara Lacy — An enchanting animated short set in 1915 Honolulu. Through the eyes of Emma, a Native Hawaiian girl preparing a heartfelt gift for Queen Liliʻuokalani, the story introduces young audiences to history, identity, and the spirit of aloha.
  • “Kūkini” by Paula Fuga — A dramatic short set during the unification battles of 1790 Hawai‘i. The film follows an elite warrior torn between duty and family, whose capture leads to a miraculous message that changes his destiny. A powerful tale of sacrifice, survival, and spiritual connection.

Organizers hope this celebration will become an annual tradition. For more information to this year’s event, visit: OUTRIGGER Waikiki Beachcomber to Co-Host Inaugural Waikīkī Film Awards Honoring Local Filmmakers Ciara Lacy & Paula Fuga – Outrigger Resorts & Hotels – Newsroom.
