Experience the Blue Angels with KHON2’s Kamaka Pili

KANEOHE, Hawaii (KHON2) — The roar of the jet engines returned to the skies over Kaneohe Bay for one last show.

Day three of the Kaneohe Bay Air Show wrapped up on Sunday, Aug. 10, where the Blue Angels took on the sky with six F-18 Super Hornets and “Fat Albert” — the C-130J Super Hercules.

KHON2’s Kamaka Pili took a ride on the world-famous aircraft, showcasing what it’s like to go supersonic.

According to Kamaka and Maj. Scott Laux, the conditions were perfect to fly.

During the flight, Kamaka said there were times when he felt uneasy. Maj. Laux said it takes a while before pilots are able to overcome those conditions.

“Gotta stay fit, gotta take care of your body. So it takes a very long time. It took a few months, after a decade or so, it’s very abnormal,” Maj. Laux explained.

“FAA requires the crowd to be a certain distance away from where the maneuvers are occurring. Normally, we use the edge of the runway or something like that, but we can’t do that here because it’s too close,” he added.

“A fighter jet should go fast. Nobody has questions on that one. What a lot of people don’t think about is it can go slowly as well. There are times when you need to turn tightly in a dog fight and that’s actually better. This aircraft in particular is designed to be a slow-speed fighter.”

The flight included many twists and turns. Kamaka experienced speeds up to 600 miles per hour.
