HONOLULU (KHON2) — A special fundraiser is set for Saturday, October 12, at the Blue Note to support Jose Fajardo, the former president of Hawaii Public Radio who has been living with amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS) since 2019.
The event, which runs from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. with doors opening at 9:30 a.m., will celebrate Fajardo’s contributions to the Hawaii community and his distinguished 40-year career in broadcasting. The fundraiser will include a silent auction, live musical performances, and a brunch. It also serves as a belated retirement and birthday celebration for Fajardo, who stepped down from his role as HPR president on July 31, 2024, due to the progression of the disease.
Fajardo, an enthusiastic runner and athlete, first noticed symptoms of ALS in his legs and arms in 2019. Despite the diagnosis and a prognosis of 3 to 5 years, he has chosen to focus on “living with ALS” rather than “dying from ALS.” His dedication to advocacy and education about the disease remains unwavering.
“I accepted the fact that my life was going to be shorter than I expected,” Fajardo said. “I chose not to let ALS define me.”
Fajardo’s wife, Jennifer, who married him four years ago, has become his primary caregiver. She highlights the emotional challenges of the disease, particularly its impact on their ability to travel and connect with family members.
“It’s incredibly difficult to get on a plane, even with assistance, which makes visiting grandkids and family far away challenging,” Jennifer said.
The event will provide an opportunity for friends, family, and the community to honor Fajardo’s legacy, share stories, and support his ongoing efforts to raise awareness about ALS. For more information, visit www.teamjose.com and follow #teamjose on Facebook and Instagram for updates on the event and other ways to support Fajardo and his family.
The Blue Note event aims to bring together those who have been touched by Fajardo’s work and personal journey, celebrating his life and contributions while supporting his ongoing advocacy for ALS awareness.
