What some have called a train to nowhere is going places. Honolulu’s Skyline opens up phase 2 later this week, and many think it is a game changer.
The new route opens up stops at Joint Base Pearl Harbor-Hickam, Daniel K. Inouye International Airport, Keehi Lagoon and the Kalihi Transit Center.
The city’s deputy transportation director tells us Skyline has grown to have over 5 thousand riders a day, and they’re hoping that number explodes with two of Hawaii’s biggest job centers now along the rail.
“Yeah, I think that’s what we’ve found,” Honolulu DTS Deputy Director Jon Nouchi said. “The people that use Skyline love Skyline. We did a survey of our ridership and they really had high satisfaction. I think what they apprise about it was Skyline, always on time. They don’t have to worry about what’s happening out on the roadways, what other thinks might affect their commute on that part of Skyline. Since that part of Skyline is getting longer now we can actually extend that invitation to welcome aboard a lot of other people who can maybe see the magic of skipping the worst part of the commute between Honolulu and the westside,”
Nouchi adds they’re looking to get to 25,000 riders per day. Skyline’s second phase opens up to the public on Thursday, October 16th.
