HONOLULU (KHON2) — Organic whole and baby carrots sold at retail and grocery stores around Hawaii are being recalled due to a potential E. coli contamination.
Officials from Grimmway Farms advise the public to check their refrigerators for whole carrots that were sold between Aug. 14 and Oct. 23. The carrots do not have a best-if-used-by date on the bag.
Affected baby carrots have a best-if-used-by date ranging from Sept. 11 to Nov. 12.
According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, the product has caused 39 illnesses in 18 states and one death to date.
While the carrots are no longer available for purchase, those who may have the product in their refrigerator or freezer should destroy or discard them so they cannot be consumed.
The public is also advised to thoroughly sanitize any surfaces they may have touched.
E. coli can cause fatal infections for keiki, elderly people and those with weakened immune systems.
Those who contract E. coli bacteria may experience severe stomach cramps, diarrhea, fever, nausea and/or vomiting.
More information on the recalled carrots can be found on the FDA’s website. Any questions and concerns can also be directed to the FDA’s customer service desk at 1 (800) 301-3101.
