H-POWER facility fire caused by propane tank explosion

HONOLULU (KHON2) — A fire occurred inside the H-POWER facility in Campbell Industry Park on Oct. 8, the city’s Department of Environmental Services confirmed.

The fire was first reported shortly after 11 a.m. and was caused by a propane tank explosion inside the plant’s Waste Processing Facility, the department said.

Officials said the propane tank was improperly disposed of before it had exploded inside the plant.

There were no injuries as a result of the explosion and subsequent fire, but the facility sustained some damage to its equipment that will have to be repaired or replaced.

Anticipated repairs or replacements include the facility’s conveyer belt and water damage to electrical systems.

During the facility’s repairs, some refuse will be diverted to the landfill until the facility is back up and running at its full capacity again.

The fire was fully extinguished at 1:22 p.m., the Honolulu Fire Department said.
