HONOLULU (KHON2) — When Hilo-based artist Kristie Fujiyama Kosmides got the call to create five massive murals for Hilo International Airport, she knew she had to make something truly special for her hometown.
Thus began an exciting collaboration that blended painting, music, and film, involving Ukulele Virtuoso Jake Shimabukuro and Hilo-based Filmmaker Tracey Niimi.
Inspired by the breathtaking natural beauty of Hawaii Island, the trio embarked on a creative journey together.
Each artist’s unique style influenced and enriched the others’ work, as they aimed to capture the island’s essence.
Recently, Mayor Mitch Roth stopped by the airport to see the installation and chat with the artists about their collaboration.
Now, anyone passing through the Hilo International Airport can feast their eyes on these impressive 18ft x 11ft murals right after clearing TSA.
And that’s not all—Jake’s mesmerizing musical piece, “Eye’s of the ‘Iiwi,” from his latest album “Grateful,” provides a sonic backdrop to the experience.
Plus, keep an eye out for Tracey’s music video premiering during Jake’s upcoming concert at the Hilo Palace Theater on May 24.
