Hawai’i football sweeps Mountain West weekly honors

The University of Hawai‘i football team swept all four Mountain West weekly honors following its season-opening 23-20 victory over Stanford on Saturday at Clarence T.C. Ching Complex.

Quarterback Micah Alejado earned both Offensive Player of the Week and Freshman of the Week. Safety Kilinahe Mendiola-Jensen was named Defensive Player of the Week, while kicker Kansei Matsuzawa took Special Teams honors.

Alejado, making his second career start, completed 27 of 39 passes for 210 yards and two touchdowns. He also rushed 10 times for 36 yards and led the Rainbow Warriors to scores on their final two possessions, including the game-winning drive. The Bishop Gorman graduate has thrown eight touchdowns with no interceptions while completing 70% of his passes across five career games.

Mendiola-Jensen, a Punahou alum, sealed the win with his first career interception, halting a key Stanford drive late in the fourth quarter with UH trailing 20-17. His play set up Matsuzawa’s game-tying field goal with just over two minutes left. He finished with four tackles, two pass breakups, and was graded as the top defensive player in the FBS during Week 0 by Pro Football Focus (90.7).

Matsuzawa drilled a 38-yard field goal as time expired to deliver the victory. He also connected from 40 and 37 yards, finishing 3-for-3 on field goals and 2-for-2 on extra points for a career-high 11 points.

Hawai‘i (1-0) travels to Arizona on Saturday to face the Big 12’s Wildcats.

Kickoff is scheduled for 4 p.m. HST on TNT.
