Longtime Hawaii Sports Writer Cindy Luis passed away on Sunday, her son Tiff Wells telling KHON2 Sports.
Luis was a trailblazer for women in media here in Hawaii throughout her career. As she became the first woman sports editor of a daily newspaper in Hawaii.
The legendary sports writer started covering Hawaii Athletics back in 1981 and continued to cover Men’s Volleyball as well as many other sports at the University for more than 4 decades before retiring in 2023.
Luis was an Award-Winning Journalist throughout her career, which included Luis being inducted into the University of Hawaii Sports Circle of Honor in 2024.
Luis worked as a sports writer in Guam, California and Hawaii. She covered many events in Hawaii; Maui Invitational, Hula Bowl, the Polynesian Bowl, NFL Pro Bowl, and much more.
