HONOLULU (KHON2) — Once again, Waikikiʻs Kaimana Beach was home to a fuzzy, little miracle.
The Hawaiian monk seal, Kaiwi, gave birth to a pup at the busy south shore beach.
This marks the fourth consecutive year that a monk seal has given birth at the popular beach.
Officials are expected to rope off an area so that Kaiwi and pup can have some space.
Officials began 24-hour enforcement operations after Kaiwi gave birth in April 2023, blocking off most of the beach area. The public was asked to stay behind a 50-yard cordon.
Kaiwi and pup will be nursing, feeding, sleeping and the pup will eventually learn to swim before Kaiwi weans the pup in several weeksʻ time.
Officials are set to hold a news conference Wednesday afternoon to discuss potential safety issues and security for the pair.
