The Bell Charitable Foundation was established by Hawaiian Telcom’s parent company, altafiber, to support nonprofits working in areas where their services are offered.

“Our mission is to advance the common good by investing in organizations that promote economic and social mobility, technological advancements, health and well-being, and environmental sustainability,” said a spokesperson for the foundation.

This October’s grant cycle will distribute approximately $500,000 to qualifying organizations.

Grants are available for U.S.-based, tax-exempt nonprofits working in key areas such as improving access to technology, enhancing community health, fostering economic stability and advancing environmental protection.

In the past year, the foundation has made significant contributions to local causes.

For example, in 2023, it awarded $140,000 in digital equity grants to celebrate Hawaiian Telcom’s 140th anniversary.

Overall, Hawaiian Telcom has contributed more than $5.5 million since 2017 through grants and sponsorships to support various nonprofits and charitable efforts across Hawai‘i.

Geraldine Ibarra, Community Relations Manager for Hawaiian Telcom, encourages nonprofits to apply.

“We are excited to continue our support for local organizations that make a real impact,” Ibarra said. “This funding provides a critical opportunity for groups to expand their reach and enhance their programs.”

Organizations interested in applying for a grant can find more details and requirements on the foundation’s website at bellfdn.org. Applications are open until Oct. 31; so, interested nonprofits should prepare their proposals soon.

The foundation’s commitment to supporting local communities aligns with Hawaiian Telcom’s broader goals of improving connectivity and closing the digital divide in Hawai‘i.

By providing these grants, the Bell Charitable Foundation aims to empower nonprofits to address pressing issues and contribute to the overall well-being of the community.
