HBL gearing up for Honolulu Century Ride

HONOLULU (KHON2) — The Hawaii Bicycling League’s 2024 Honolulu Centry Ride is coming up at the end of the month, and it’s a weekend full of fun activities for anybody interested in cycling, including keiki. Chris Salas with the HBL joined Take2 Thursday morning to talk story about what’s being offered.

“It’s not only our largest event of the year but it’s also our largest fundraiser of the year. We put some special touches on it by having specialty foods at each of the aid stations to help fuel the riders and having live entertainment at the finish area for riders and the general public to enjoy,” Salas said.

This will be the 41st Honolulu Century Ride. It has taken a few forms over the years, but Salas says it’s always been about bringing multiple communities together to ride and to open up the opportunity for someone to challenge themselves to maybe ride a distance they never have before.

“It’s the safest day to ride. With all the other cyclists’ presence on the road, HPD helping out at key intersections, coning where needed for extra safety, and with the fully stocked aid stations there is plenty of aloha out there on the road.”

Should kids be riding e-bikes, what are the rules?

The HBL focuses on advocacy and education about cycling in the islands, and will be celebrating their 50th anniversary in 2025.

“We’ve been running the 4th grade BikeED program that teaches 1000s of students every year. We also host multiple adult ed classes from learning how to ride a bike to fixing a flat tire to an e bikes 101 class,” Salas said.

Even folks who don’t ride can participate.

“We have lots of volunteer opportunities throughout the weekend as well as live entertainment and a keiki bike rodeo at Kapiolani for all to enjoy,” Salas said. “An event like this takes hundreds of people to make happen and we greatly appreciate everyone’s help and we hope for many to come down and enjoy the Ride Aloha Festival.”
