HONOLULU (KHON2) — Hawaiian Electric is closely monitoring weather conditions across the state ahead of strong winds expected Friday, which could increase the risk of wildfires.
The National Weather Service (NWS) issued a fire weather watch today for leeward areas on all Hawaiian Islands from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. Friday, Nov. 15, due to forecasted low humidity and gusty winds.
As a precaution, Hawaiian Electric said it may implement its Public Safety Power Shutoff (PSPS) program to reduce wildfire risk.
HECO does not anticipate needing to shut off power before Friday, it will continue to assess the situation and provide updates if conditions worsen.
“We are taking all necessary steps to monitor the situation and ensure the safety of our communities,” said Hawaiian Electric in a statement.
The company has activated its emergency response plan, which includes coordinating with local emergency officials and urging residents to prepare for potential power outages.
How to Prepare for Possible Outages
Hawaiian Electric advises customers to take the following steps to prepare for possible outages:
- Check emergency equipment such as flashlights, generators, and battery-powered radios, ensuring they are operational and stocked with extra batteries
- If you or someone in your household depends on electrically powered medical equipment, make sure backup power options are available and plan for alternative locations if evacuation is needed
- Use portable generators safely by placing them outdoors in well-ventilated areas and following the manufacturer’s instructions
- Set your refrigerator and freezer to their coldest settings to preserve food in case of an outage
- Unplug unnecessary devices, especially sensitive electronics, to avoid damage from power surges
HECO also reminds residents to stay safe during power outages by avoiding downed power lines and flooded areas. If you see a downed line, stay at least 30 feet away and call 911 for emergencies.
