HONOLULU (KHON2) — Overnight, on Sept. 20, HFD extinguished a fire at an auto recycling facility in Pearl City and this morning, a nearby pool closed due to ash.

At 1:22 am, HFD received a 911 call reporting smoke sighted at Lehua Ave. in Pearl City. Three units staffed with nine personnel initially responded to the scene, officials stated.
At 1:32 am, the first HFD units arrived at the scene, where they found a large pile of metal on fire. HFD immediately began its efforts to extinguish the fire, officials said.
Officials reported that additional help was requested to help extinguish the fire. A total of nine units with 28 personnel responded.
HFD said, at 3:13 a.m., the fire was under control. Firefighters used the assistance of heavy equipment to identify hot spots and apply overhaul tactics to prevent further rekindling from hidden fires.
By 6:45 a.m., HFD reported the fire was officially extinguished.
This morning, Honolulu Department of Parks and Recreation officials released a statement online stating:
“The K. Mark Takai Veterans Memorial Aquatic Center will be closed today, Sept. 20, due to an overnight fire. The ash from the fire covered much of the facility, and our pool staff are working to clean it. The pool will resume normal operation on Monday, Sept. 22.”
