HFD: Woman injured after scooter fire in Kalihi

HONOLULU (KHON2) — Honolulu Fire Department confirmed a woman was injured after a building fire broke out in Kalihi.

According to HFD, on July 11, around 6:20 p.m., firefighters responded to a building fire on Haka Drive. After arriving at the scene, they found an extinguished electric scooter.

Nearby, firefighters found a woman with burns to her face and hair, with difficulty breathing from smoke inhalation.

HFD provided treatment, and the woman was transferred to Emergency Medical Services.

HFD wants to remind people of the dangers of Lithium-ion batteries, found in smartphones, e-bikes and e-cigarettes, if not used correctly or damaged.

HFD provided some safety tips on how to properly handle and store Lithium-ion batteries:

  • Purchase and use devices that are listed by a qualified testing laboratory.
  • Always follow the manufacturer’s instructions.
  • Only use the battery that is designed for the device.
  • Put batteries in the device the right way.
  • Only use the charging cord that came with the device.
  • Do not charge a mobility device like an e-bike or e-scooter indoors.
  • Do not keep charging the device or device battery after it is fully charged.
  • Keep batteries at room temperature when possible. Do not charge them at
    temperatures below 32°F (0°C) or above 105°F (40°C).
  • Store batteries away from anything that can catch fire.
