HONOLULU (KHON2) — The Honolulu Police Department and the Honolulu Emergency Medical Services said they responded to a 911 call early in the morning on Sept. 1.
There was a major incident involving bicyclists and a hit-and-run on the H-1 East freeway in Aiea. The crash involved five vehicles, beginning around 12:30 a.m.
According to HPD, a 19-year-old motorcyclist was riding eastbound and crashed into another motorcyclist who was 23 years old.
Both motorcyclists fell onto the road from their bikes.
In order to help render aid, a 20-year-old driver stopped to help, said police. They also said this is when another vehicle, whose driver didn’t stop, hit the 19-year-old motorcyclist and his bike.
This collision caused the bike to hit the car that had stopped to help, according to HPD.
Police said that while this was happening, a 20-year-old woman riding as a passenger on a motorcycle got hit by debris from the accident.
The 19-year-old motorcyclist who was hit by the hit-and-run vehicle was taken to the hospital in serious condition, according to both HPD and EMS.
The 23-year-old motorcyclist and the 20-year-old female passenger were both taken to the hospital but were in good condition. The 20-year-old driver who stopped to render aid and his passengers were not hurt.
The 19-year-old motorcyclist was wearing a helmet, which helped protect him, but the police are still investigating what caused the crash.
On Aug. 29, Oahu experienced it 28th traffic related fatality involving a 47-year-old motorcyclist in the area of Hookui Street and Puowaina Drive in the Punchbowl area.
