HONOLULU (KHON2) — Voyaging duo Hōkūleʻa and Hikianalia of the Polynesian Voyaging Society have reached a major milestone in the boats’ progress to Tahiti.
The canoes have reached the Intertropical Convergence Zone, which is commonly known as the doldrums. At the doldrums, the northeast and southeast trade winds converge, which can complicate things for voyagers.
Canoe crews have thankfully experienced calm seas, with the occasional bursts of wind and heavy rain, with their spirits remaining high.
Landfall for the canoes are anticipated in approximately two weeks, weather permitting. The voyage can be followed at Hōkūleʻa’s website and by visiting @hokuleacrew on social media.
