Honolulu breaks ground on new traffic signal facility to boost roadway safety

HONOLULU (KHON2) – The City and County of Honolulu has started construction on a new traffic signal maintenance facility at Waimano Home Road.

The new building will include a warehouse, offices, maintenance rooms, locker areas and 29 parking stalls for city vehicles and staff.

Construction began on Sept. 29, 2025, and is expected to finish by late spring 2027, the city said.

Once the project is completed, the facility will serve as a main hub for storing signal supplies, dispatching workers, and managing signal repairs and maintenance across Oʻahu.

“This new facility represents a major investment in keeping Oʻahu’s streets safe and efficient,” said Roger Morton, director of the Department of Transportation Services. “By providing our staff with modern workspaces and the tools they need, we are ensuring that the city can respond quickly to issues and maintain reliable traffic operations across the island.”

The $12.9 million construction contract was awarded to Ralph S. Inouye Co. Ltd., and the $649,000 design contract went to Architects Pacific, Inc.
