HONOLULU (KHON2) — Are you or someone you know looking for a new career? The City and County of Honolulu’s Emergency Medical Services is hiring for its Emergency Medical Technician Academy starting Tuesday and going through Thursday, Aug. 22.
Honolulu EMS said applicants are required to be at least 18 years of age, have a drivers license and a high school diploma.
“Right now the city has an open recruitment for the next couple of days to apply for this program. We’re looking to run this program in spring of 2025 and we’ll send them through training as they’ll get training as an emergency driver. They’ll go through EMT curriculum at the national and state level. Some hospital and ambulance clinical hours and then we’ll get them licensed and certified to work,” Honolulu EMS Assistant Chief Korey Chock said.
There are certain types of personalities that are more prone to success in the position.
“Some of the qualities that we’re looking for is we need people to be calm under pressure,” Chock said. “People are calling 911 for the worst day of their life and we need people to be calm under pressure. We need them to be critical thinkers, good team players, and have good communication skills with each other. That’s some of the key things that we look for.”
One of the great things is the fulfillment of helping others.
“It’s a great job. It’s demanding and you gotta be dedicated. You’re a public servant, we’re looking for people who want to help their community. It’s fast-paced, it’s exciting. It’s a lifelong career so please apply if you can,” Honolulu EMS Paramedic Supervisor Sunny Johnson said.
Qualified applicants will be required to take a written test that is scheduled for Oct. 26. Once accepted into the Academy, recruits will earn a starting pay of $4,933 a month.
