HONOLULU (KHON2) — Two Hawaiʻi counties have some announcements and changes coming to their DMVs.
Here’s what we know.
Appointments with Honolulu’s DMV
The City and County of Honolulu wants Oʻahu residents to stop relying on walk-ins for DMV and satellite city hall services.
Officials said appointments are still the best way to renew licenses, register mopeds or transfer vehicle titles. The reminder comes after a 7% jump in the use of the AlohaQ reservation system last year.
“Scheduling an appointment is highly encouraged as we continue to take steps to greatly improve wait times and convenience at our service locations,” said Kim Hashiro, director of the Department of Customer Services.
Stand-by service is available but limited. Walk-ins are only helped if someone cancels or doesn’t show up. Officials warn this can lead to much longer waits.

Kaua‘i DMV changes hours for training
Both the Līhu‘e and Kapa‘a DMV offices on Kaua‘i will be closed Wednesday, Oct. 8, for staff training. Normal hours will resume Thursday, Oct. 9.
The new Kapa‘a Satellite DMV is open only to people with appointments. It operates Monday through Friday, 8 a.m. to 4 p.m., except on holidays.
It handles vehicle registrations, utility payments, bus passes and tipping coupons. Driver’s license services are not available at this location.
The Līhu‘e DMV accepts walk-ins but recommends appointments. Hours are the same, with kūpuna hour from 8 to 8:45 a.m. Walk-ins are allowed until 2 p.m. and may be delayed.
Customers should arrive no earlier than 15 minutes before a scheduled appointment and no later than 5 minutes after.
