Honolulu Ocean Safety to close popular areas in preparation for high surf levels

HONOLULU (KHON2) — With Hurricane Kiko steering away from direct contact with Hawaiʻi, storm effects are manifesting in a different way than the usual speedy winds and heavy rain: high surf levels.

High surf levels are expected on the east sides of the Hawaiian Islands, with experts anticipating 10- to 14-foot waves.

In anticipation of Kiko’s high surf, Honolulu Ocean Safety is preparing Oʻahu by increasing staffing for their District 2 areas, which covers the east side of the island.

Additionally, Ocean Safety plans to work close with the state Department of Land and Natural Resources to close potentially risky areas, such as the Makapuʻu lighthouse trail and tide pools.

Closures are to begin on the afternoon of Sept. 8 and last through Sept. 10.

Given the potentially dangerous nature of the high surf, Ocean Safety is urging the public to act with caution near the shorelines, avoid being on the shore and to check in with lifeguards.
