HONOLULU (KHON2) — A suspect has been arrested in connection with the Wahiawa playground arson that happened in early May.
According to the Honolulu Police Department, a man was identified and arrested on Monday, July 21, for arson in the first degree.
He was later released pending investigation.
Officials said the investigation is still ongoing and will be referred to the Office of the Prosecuting Attorney for review after the investigation is complete.
The incident happened around 11 p.m. when the structure was found fully engulfed in flames. The playground had just reopened following a $121,000 renovation.
Upon further investigation, the Honolulu Fire Department said an accelerant had been used to start the blaze.

With the help of local volunteers, the playground was rebuilt a few weeks later and reopened on June 20.
