HPD enforces e-bike regulations, Kailua riders cited

KAILUA, Hawaii (KHON2) — Several e-bike riders in Windward Oahu have been cited for e-bike-related violations, according to Honolulu Police Department.

On Friday, March 14, officers cited multiple children at Keolu Hills Skateboard Park after one of them was seen popping a wheelie on the sidewalk.

Police added that the child’s action forced pedestrians to jump out of the way.

HPD said one 14-year-old boy refused to get off his e-bike, then proceeded to shove an officer and resist arrest.

The teen not only received citations for e-bike violations, but was arrested for refusing to stop a motor vehicle, resisting arrest and harassing a police officer.

He was taken to the hospital to be treated for self-inflicted, non-life threatening injuries.

Honolulu police urge parents and adults to understand the laws when it comes to e-bikes to help keep keiki safe.
