HONOLULU (KHON2) – Hawaiian Humane Society wrapped up its Sept. adoption event this past weekend with hundreds of animals placed into new homes.
In total, 320 cats, 230 dogs, 16 rabbits, seven guinea pigs, two tortoises, and one bird were adopted.
The event helped reduce overcrowding, but Hawaiian Humane still has close to 1,000 animals in its care. Some are receiving medical treatment, others are in foster homes, and many are waiting to be adopted.
To continue reducing the numbers, Hawaiian Humane will participate in the Empty the Shelters National Adoption Event from Oct. 1 through Oct. 15.
During this time, adoption fees will be 50% off for adult cats and dogs. For kittens, the second adoption fee will be waived when adopting a pair.
The adoption promotion is meant to lower barriers and connect more animals with permanent homes.

For residents not ready to adopt, fostering remains an option through Hawaiian Humane’s Lap and Couch Crashers programs, which allow short-term stays for pets in local homes.
