HONOLULU (KHON2) — The Kahala Mall was filled with those looking to stay safe in times of crisis, with the Eastside Emergency Preparedness Fair taking place on Aug. 2.
From 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. residents were able to learn how to prepare for whatever life may throw at us.
Representatives from resource agencies were present to answer questions and share advice for preparing for the worst.
Participating organizations included Aina Haina Prepared, Salvation Army, Honolulu Fire Department, Honolulu Police Department, Hawaii Emergency Amateur Radio Club and more.
The free event was sure to educate the public on a various array of topics, including tsunamis and prepping go bags.
“Tsunamis happen 365 days a year, just like the one that just happened. So [you] just got to be aware, be prepared,” said Gavan Imamura, president of Aina Haina Prepared. “Have a 14-day go-kit with you on-hand, have supplies.”
Matthew Glei, a disaster preparedness instructor in Honolulu, said to ensure your go bags have some food and a communication device.
“So we got snacks, we got water here on the side. Once again, this is one for each person,” Glei said while showing off his emergency bag. “Inside, I’ve got a radio that allows me to find out what’s going on.”
For the public, learning these essential safety tips for disaster can make all the difference during times of distress.
