HONOLULU (KHON2) — The celebrated Hawaiian music group Kapena is marking its 40th anniversary with a reunion tour, having thrilled audiences with their unique mix of traditional Hawaiian and contemporary music since their formation in 1985.
Founded by Kelly Boy De Lima and brothers Tiva and Timo Tatofi, Kapena first gained recognition representing Kaimuki High School at the “Brown Bags to Stardom” competition.
Over the years, the group has become a household name in Hawaii.
To commemorate their milestone, Honolulu Mayor Rick Blangiardi declared Saturday as “Kapena Day.”
Blangiardi praised the band for bringing honor and acclaim to the island community.
Kapena’s anniversary tour will begin this Saturday at the Tom Moffatt Waikiki Shell and will include performances in Las Vegas, California, and Washington state.
