Kauaʻi DMV halting some services until next week

LIHUE, Hawaii (KHON2) — People who are trying to get a driver’s license or state identification card on Kaua‘i will need to wait until next week to do so.

The Division of Motor Vehicles for Kauaʻi said the production of identification cards is down because of hardware problems.

Officials for the county said the DMV is expecting services to be restored on Monday, Sept. 8., and that staff are working with vendors to fix the issue.

Here’s what we know.

Appointments canceled

The DMV is calling or emailing people who had appointments this week to let them know about the interruption in service. All appointments for driver’s licenses, commercial driver’s licenses and state ID cards are canceled at this time.

Anyone who needs a new time must rebook through the DMV website. Officials did confirm that road test payments will not be lost. The DMV said those payments will be held and applied to the next scheduled appointment.

Permit testing still happening

Officials confirmed that permit tests will still be given. The DMV will hold test results for 30 days to give people time to return once card services are working again.

Other services continue

Not everything is shut down. The DMV is still open for motor vehicle services, ADA placards and utility bill payments.

Officials said people can find information or make appointments online. The DMV website will provide updates as services are restored.

The DMV encourages people to plan ahead as appointments may fill up quickly once identification card services are back.
