Kauai officials continue search for missing snorkeler off Nukolii Beach

WAILUA, Hawaii (KHON2) — Kauai officials are on high alert in Wailua in the search for a Lihue man who went missing while snorkeling.

Kauai Fire Department initially responded to the scene on Saturday around 6:40 p.m. when it was reported that 50-year-old Gary Gushiken was snorkeling with a group at Nukolii Beach before he got separated.


Kauai County: No major impacts from Hone, monitoring looming storms in Eastern Pacific

The U.S. Coast Guard, Ocean Safety Bureau, DLNR and other County resources have also joined the search in the air, on land and sea throughout the weekend.

Officials said “air and ocean assets from the County are on standby” due to weather conditions.

In a 1 p.m. update, the Kauai Police Department said “Air 1 and assets from the U.S. Coast Guard conducted ocean and air searches for the missing man.”

Gushiken’s family has been offered support from volunteers with grief counseling service, Life’s Bridges.
