HONOLULU (KHON2) — This year’s Localicious Recipe Contest Live Cook-Off will take place on Sunday, July 13 at the Hawaii State Farm Fair. More than just a contest, it teaches keiki the importance of healthy food while using local ingredients.
The Localicious Art & Recipe Contest is an annual statewide contest for students in grades K through 12th grade. Students submit either original artwork or a healthy school lunch recipe using locally sourced ingredients.
The goal is to get kids thinking creatively about what’s on their lunch plate and how local agriculture can be part of it.
Liz Stanton from the Hawaii Agricultural Foundation shared that the winners of the Art Contest were awarded in the spring. The top three high school recipe finalists will compete in a live cook-off at the Hawaii State Farm Fair.
“It is so important for students to really understand where our food comes from, why they want to eat things, what they’re eating and also just supports our local economy,” Stanton said.
Locally grown food isn’t just healthier — it supports our farmers and can even spark interest in agriculture careers and culinary fields. Our future keiki become part of the conversation around food sustainability and security in Hawaii.
