Kula man hospitalized in near-fatal Makawao crash

HONOLULU (KHON2) — A Kula man is suffering life-threatening injuries after a near-fatal motor vehicle collision on Maui.

According to Maui police, the crash happened around 7:30 p.m. on Makawao Avenue about 100 feet southwest of Ai Street.

Officials said the collision involved an orange 2017 Chevrolet Colorado pickup truck and a grey 2022 Yamaha MT-03.

Initial reports said the pickup truck was exiting a parking area onto Makawao Avenue. At the same time, the motorcyclist was traveling southbound.

The two vehicles collided, despite the motorcyclist engaging its breaks. As a result, the 28-year-old motorcyclist from Kula was ejected from the motorcycle and was found in critical condition.

Reports said he was transported to Maui Memorial Medical Center and remains in critical condition.

The 49-year-old Chevrolet driver from Hana was also transported to Maui Memorial Medical Center and was treated for minor injuries. According to MPD, he was released after receiving treatment.

MPD said the investigation revealed that the motorcyclist was not wearing a helmet at the time of the incident.

Officials added that the pickup truck driver wore a seatbelt and “the vehicle’s side airbags did deploy.”
