HONOLULU (KHON2) — Hundreds of acres of farmland were lost in recent brush fires in Kunia.
In an effort to rebuild, local businesses have launched “Kokua Kunia” — a month-long fundraising drive to help farmers recover from losses. One fire damaged 800 acres used by Ko Hana Distillers and Nalo Farms, and at least two fires in Kunia last month were intentionally set.
“The fires were devastating. In Kunia Village, six farms were severely damaged, and some were completely destroyed,” said Tiffany Tubon, the Brand Manager of Ko Hana Rum. “These aren’t just businesses; they’re family legacies and the heart of our community’s food supply. Many farmers lost everything—their equipment, their crops and their ability to earn a living. The impact goes beyond the farms themselves; it affects all the families who rely on them for fresh produce and employment.”
The goal is to raise $100,000 for the Kunia Village Development Corporation. Tubon says they’re looking to provide immediate and direct relief to these farming families.
“Every dollar we raise will go toward helping them rebuild. This includes purchasing new equipment, replacing irrigation systems and buying seeds and supplies so they can get back to farming as quickly as possible,” Tubon said. “We want to help them not just recover, but also become more resilient for the future. This is a community effort, and every donation, no matter the size, makes a real difference.”
Ko Hana is offering special cocktails with 100% of the proceeds going to KVDC at participating local bars and restaurants.
There is also a fundraising event, which Tubon says will benefit the cause.
“We have a big community fundraising event coming up Saturday, Sept. 20, from 4 p.m. to 7 p.m. at Kō Hana’s distillery in Kunia. We’ll have delicious food from This Lil Piggy, Barrio Cafe and Sage Creamery. We’re also releasing three brand new rums at the event, and the proceeds from all bottle sales will go to the KVDC,” she said. “A ticket gets you admission and a tasting of our new release, ‘Kokua Reserve.’”
