Lahaina man, 48, dead following Maui collision

MAUI, Hawaii (KHON2) — An early morning motor vehicle collision left a 48-year-old man dead in Lahaina, the Maui Police Department said.

The collision occurred on Oct. 16 at approximately 5:46 a.m. on Honoapiilani Highway, police said.

A female motorist was driving an SUV down the highway when they struck the 48-year-old bicyclist, investigators said.

The bicyclist was then ejected off of his bicycle, causing him to sustain critical, life-threatening injuries, MPD said.

He was taken to Maui Memorial Medical Center in critical condition, where he later died from his injuries, police said. He was not wearing a helmet during the incident.

The woman was uninjured and remained at the scene.

Police have since identified the victim as Michael Bautista of Lahaina.

This marks Maui County’s 13th traffic fatality of the year, compared to 11 at the same time last year.
