HONOLULU (KHON2) — Hawaii Island residents felt what they described as “light shaking” after a 4.0-magnitude earthquake occurred 11 miles west-northwest of Volcano.
The earthquake happened on Saturday, Nov. 30 morning around 8:40 a.m. near the top of Mauna Loa Road at a depth of 13 miles below sea level.
According to the Hawaiian Volcano Observatory, the quake was south of Mauna Loa’s Northeast Rift Zone and is “unrelated to magmatic activity.”
Officials added neither Mauna Loa nor Kilauea were impacted.
More than 130 Hawaii Island residents reported the earthquake within the first hour, including residents from the Puna district, Hilo, Hamakua Coast, North Kona and Kau.
HVO said the earthquake intensity did not pose a threat to buildings or infrastructure.
The island may see aftershocks within the coming days to weeks.
